Herbs help the body to heal by bringing it back into balance. They are chosen according to their actions, for example: warming, cooling, nourishing, draining, astringing or purging. Herbal medicine is sometimes called phytotherapy, meaning therapy using plant products.
Herbs can be used singly but are often combined with other herbs to make a prescription that is tailored to an individual’s needs. With time the prescription may need to be adjusted according to the changes seen in the patient. Herbs can be taken in many different forms, such as teas, powders, tinctures, pills and capsules. Even though herbs are ‘natural’, it is safer to take herbs only after consulting with a properly qualified herbalist.
Today in the UK herbs are available not only from Europe but also from places like Australia, China, India and North and South America.
